Beskrivelse: Florence in November 4 November 1966, immense flooding of the River Arno hits the city of Florence. The people of Italy mobilise to provide aid. Bologna is on the front line. The first images depict the devastation caused to the Tuscan capital by the flooding. Piazza Maggiore in Bologna immediately becomes the coordination centre for emergency aid relief: volunteers, vehicles, the forces of order, buses and bulldozers assemble, under the watch of Mayor Guido Fanti. Upon reaching Florence, the volunteers free streets and houses from mud with bulldozers and spades. At the National Library, a long human chain composed of young people from all over Italy pass damaged codices from one to another, leaving them to dry in the sun. People are also hard at work at the Faculty of Architecture, the “Santa Croce Residents’ Committee”, and in other places throughout the city. The volunteers, who have arrived by bus from Bologna, continue to shovel mud and repair piping. The first effects of the immense relief work become noticeable, traffic brings to flow again. This film is the property of the Emilia-Romagna Gramsci Foundation.
